The Lowcountry—home to vibrant communities like Charleston and its surrounding areas—is also home to a hidden crisis: thousands of children without access to affordable, quality health care.

According to 2018 data, more than 4 million children in the United States were uninsured—69,000 of them in South Carolina. Many families earn too much to qualify for Medicaid or CHIP, but not enough to afford private insurance or marketplace coverage. This “coverage gap” leaves children vulnerable to untreated health issues that can escalate over time.

The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that the number of uninsured children is rising—a troubling trend with long-term consequences for physical, emotional, and cognitive development.

At Health Fund for Children (HF4C), we believe every child deserves the chance to thrive. As a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our mission is simple:

Right now, HF4C is supporting two local children—a middle schooler and an elementary school student—who both need heart procedures.
